Worn Cam
1990 Pontiac Sunbird 2.0L Fuel Injected - is Cam Problem...?
I think I have finaly discovere'd the problem, but need more opinions from people with more expertise...it runs really rough, and blows black smoke once in awhile, and stinks sometimes. When I replaced the valve cover gasket from leaking, then i noticed the upper cam lobes are severely worn, like so bad I can slide my finger between the lobe ridges. car still run's 50/50 meaning it has power still for an old 4 cyl. but have had problems trying to adjust timing...I think now it's just about where it's got to be bacuse it only hesitates very little now when i take off from a stop, but still gets up and goes...I'm wondering about replacing the cam, and would it fix all the noises the engine is making, It sounds like a really loud ticking when I start it up, and when I'm in the car driving it's not so noticeable...but it would never pass inspection in RI the way it's running so rough now....
