Pinhole Dvr
Does anyone know about port forwarding?
I'm trying to port forward a Nuvico DVR in a convenience store but can't manage to get it right and I dont know why. The details are as followed; It's a Nuvico dvr with several cameras connected to it. The only way we can see it right now is with the monitor directly connected to it. I can't see to get it on the Local area Network or WAN. There's a motorola netopia router that is controlling the internet. The router has service by att and they are using static i.p.'s so this is a first for me. The i.p. address for the dvr is 192.168.0.xxx while the default gateway is 192.168.1.xxx Is this the reason why? does the dvr i.p. have to be 192.168.1.xxx? port number is 7000. Someone please help. The port forwarding section on the router is called "pinhole". I tried calling nuvico for help and they said I had to call the manufacturer of the router so I contacted motorola and they said there was a charge of $30 just for technical support wtf is that. Anyway can someone help please.!!!
Your main problem is what you already identified. the DVR and router must be on the same subnet. (192.168.1.x is probably best)
I'm guessing the DVR is probably a static IP. If so, set it to 192.168.1.250 to make it unlikely that it will conflict with something else. Ideally you would either create a static reservation or assign it an address outside the DHCP scope. If that doesn't make any sense just give it the 250 address.
Next, if you can't access it from the LAN, don't even bother trying to get it to work from the internet. Get that working first.
then you would create the forward rule to send port 7000 to the IP address if the DVR.
Be aware, that once you open that port, anyone on the internet has access to the same thing you do from the internet. In truth most people won't ever know/care but the ones who do discover it are the same ones who would be interested in checking it out. Be sure to use a strong password. Even then consider whether you would want what the cameras show to be visible by some guy in the parking lot with a laptop and a need for cash. (like whether anyone is in the store, how many people are working, how many of the last customers paid in cash, etc.)
