Home Security and motion senors?
What happens if you armed your home security system, which has motion senors installed, at night before you sleep, and you happened to get up for some particular reason. Will your movement activate the home security system via motion sensors? Also if anyone knows how to build your own security from small components from local electronics shops or know where to look for information please respond. Thank you :]
Most modern home security systems have the ability to set different zones on or off. So you might want to have the motion sensors for the bottom floor of a two story house activated, but not the ones for the second story where everyone is sleeping. This would require a user panel at the top of the stairs so the motion sensors could be turned off before going downstairs.

One thing you need to know about home alarm systems - most municipalities require you to register the existence of the system with the police for one or both of the following:
1. You have a horn, siren, or bell that is audible outside the property. This is because it is noisy and a concern regarding noise ordinances.
2. You expect the police to respond to a third-party monitoring service that calls the 911 emergency service to report an alarm is tripped. (alarm could be for burglary, panic, or fire, or medical).

If you are hoping for a lower cost on your home insurance premium, most insurance companies require the alarm to be professionally installed and monitored by a third party.
For businesses and commercial establishments, the State of Texas (where I am) requires a licensed professional - one in fire safety or a professional engineer who specializes in fire safety - to determine the appropriate location for fire/flame/smoke detectors.
I don't remember what is required for fire detectors for residences, it has been a long time since I worked for an alarm company.
But if all you want is some way to know if someone is messing with your house or a kid is sleepwalking, then a home-made system is ok !
Now for the parts - I looked at the Radio Shack website and they don't seem to have anything. They used to. Here is a link to some PDF files of the manuals for products they used to carry:

So I used Yahoo Search with the phrase:
home burglar alarm parts
and got a huge number of links. You will probably do best looking for companies that are close to where you live so you can look at the parts before buying them.
I clicked on one at random and got a page that is well-laid out and has links to manuals for some of the parts, although one of those links did not work. This is the link, but I know nothing about the company, it's just good to know what parts are out there and who makes them (Honeywell, Ademco, Radionics, etc.)

There is a huge difference in cost and installation time between using wired and wireless sensors. The wireless sensors allow you to move the sensors around (good for motion detectors) to find the best spot for detection. But anyone else can also move them around too, which defeats your purpose. Wired sensors are more resistant to tampering, such as those installed in drilled holes in door frames, but they are far more labor-intensive and there is more clean-up after the work is done.
