Why do lithium batteries weigh less than rechargeable batteries?

I just noticed that my long last lithium AA batteries weigh a little less than my rechargeable nimh batteries. According to my camera manual, the lithium batteries will last longer than the rechargeable nimh batteries. If E=MC2, why is it that the lithium batteries, which weigh less than my rechargeable batteries, have more power?

The element Li is lighter than Ni, just like helium is lighter than lead. The chemical composition of Lithium batteries allows them to hold more electrons, which is the source of power. E=MC^2 doesn't really apply to this because that equation is talking about the energy content, not how well it can release that energy.
