High Quality Portable Recorder?

I play sax and am in various ensembles and want a portable recorder to record my performances. Someone recommended the tascam dr1 but I'm not sure if there are other better models/brands? Does anyone know what a good one is? I'm looking to spend somewhere from $300-500.
