Port Passive
Is a modern submarine detection by sonar sailboat or other means of periscope?
I wonder ... Is a military modern submarine (like U.S. or Russian nuclear attack submarines) for detecting a sailboat on the surface by the sonar or any other way than to stick the scope and look around? A sailboat is relatively low (usually no more than 40 feet), built of light materials (plastic composite above, rarely aluminum or wood or steel) and is generally under sail, using the engine of most of enter and exit ports. So the only noise it makes is the sound of the hull moving through water. Can modern passive sonar picked up and distinguish from other sounds of the sea? OK, one more thing I probably did not clear - I was thinking mostly passive sonar, active sonar of which is certainly possible, but submarines regularly avoid using active sonar as revealed by their presence to other military vessels.
Sonar requires the return of its echo. Whales and schools of fish can be collected. Both are submerged if the whole object is available for the returning echo. In the case of a surface ship that part of the submerged hull available. Plastic and fiberglass both are very good sound insulation. Everything is possible. I seem to remember that subs are required to check the surface, at least in some specific locations close to the earth, seems that was mentioned when the Japanese ship was hit by HI a few years ago. See link. Electronic devices can be very complex, in theory, service and repair. The ATM cash you take 2 -3 each textbook about 8 inches thick. There is no more than 5 devices inside to complete the transaction in the case of sonar / radar / data comm / CCTV / Access Control (Card Key) and many other systems, operations are complex and not always easy expected. Sonar is one that has more variables to drive operators and repairers crazy. It is subject to the depth / temperature / salinity water, the calculation is very complex and not always accurate. Edit: active sonar would probably have problems. The noise emitted by a small engine could be resumed, not sure how far though. A sailing yacht will be very very very quiet .... let me add a very more!
