I have always believed (at least from 1999 until now) that video games would lead us into virtual reality?
Virtual reality as portrayed in novels and movies where interaction is so real you have trouble discerning it from what is the real world. Video games are the only medium I see bringing us into that. Movies are just more passive even with alternate endings and such. Agree or disagree?
Completely agree. The early video games with any kind of role-play required an active imagination from the participant because it was so unrealistic. We are now moving into detailed environments with realistic interactive characters and environments that give true depth to the virtual world created. GTA IV is such an example.
A leap in interface design and exceptionally high resolution with the capacity to give feedback to all of our senses would certainly take us into a virtual reality that is indistinguishable from or own. It poses interesting questions about the nature of reality, which I won't go into, but the potential for such devices exists in the near future.
