When do I charge my lithium battery?
I just got a new labtop computer and some people tell me to wait to charge the computer until the battery is completely dead because it make it so in the future my computer can hold a charge longer. Other people tell me that I should charge it every night. I don't want to end up have a battery that can only hold a charge for a couple of hours. I know that lithium battery has this problem but I don’t know which way is right.
A lithium-ion battery must not be treated like the old nickel-cadmium batteries. These old batteries had "memory", so if you did not change them correctly, you could loose your change.
One thing for sure, you battery will not get "better" with time. You can only avoid degradation. In the case of these new batteries, you don't have to do that much.
However, once in a while (every month for example), discharge your battery completely (or almost) by using your computer normally, then let it charge fully.
A typical Li-Io battery should last about 300 cycles (e.g. discharges + charges). My Macbook Pro has a counter and after 1.5 years, I've done 114 cycles. The battery has a health of about 85%. I expect to change it after 2.5-3 years of use.
Try to install a battery manager from your laptop's manufacturer. You might have access to detailed technical information that should give you the "health" of your battery.
