Can I hook up a cable tv DVR to my computer to increase the DVR's storage space?
i have a bresnan digital cable package, and i subscribed to dvr. the cable box has many hookups that would plug into a computer, for example usb2.0 and firewire400. is it possible to expand the storage space of the cable box onto my computer? does it matter if i have windows xp home edition instead of media center edition? any suggestions are great
You can hook up your DVR to your computer but you will need a TV card. After that use the software the TV card came with to record TV shows. The only problem you will have is that the tv card will want to change channels as well as the DVR so there will be a conflict. I suggest you choose which one you would prefer to use. If you use the DVR you will only get to use the amount of hard drive space on the DVR; if you use the Computer you can put in a bigger hard drive. If you se the computer you may also want to try a program called beyond. The pro to that is you do not have to pay a monthly subscription fee for the DVR just use the standard cable box and it works like a DVR when some of the TV card software may not get all your channel's. The other thing to consider if you get a TV card is if you want an external or internal card.
To answer your second question it does not matter if you use Window XP Home or Media edition. The major difference is that the Media edition has the software to record tv shows.
