on major camera brands are there different versions of the same model camera?
I've been told that some of the major camera brands sell different versions of the exact same model number where one is called an "import version" and the other is called the "USA" version that is supposed to have a much better warranty. Is this possible?
Well, sort of.
You've heard the right idea, but not exactly how it works.
First of all, most cameras are not made in the US or by US manufacturers. So they are all imported one way or the other.
Now, most manufacturers market their cameras in different parts of the world differently. First of all, they set them up for different default settings, like different language or TV output system. Then there are some minor differences to make them compliant with local laws, such as putting appropriate warnings required by certain governments, etc.
So yes, they are slightly differently made for different countries. Each manufacturer knows which cameras are made for which countries by their serial number.
Then comes in the most interesting part - pricing. The manufacturers price their cameras differently in different countries. So the Indian version of the same camera may be priced a lot cheaper than US version to make it more affordable for the Indian population.
So, this pricing difference creates grounds for gray import. When some of the cameras manufactured for India are instead sent to the US, or cameras are bought in India and then imported over to US from India. There is nothing illegal about it as far as country and state laws are concerned, therefore it is not a black market import. But it is done against the will of a manufacturer. There is only one thing manufacturers can really do to discourage this kind of import: not to honor the manufacturer warranty in countries other than original intended country.
So if you buy that gray import camera for cheap, if something is wrong with it - your only choice is to ship it to India for service. The counter measure by gray importers is to sell their own warranty on these cameras, like MACK warranty or store warranties. So after all the camera and warranty may cost you a little less or the same as if you bought the US version with original manufacturers warranty. That's unless you want to gamble and not get the warranty at all.
This is all a very complicated process, so I hope I didn't confuse you any further.
