I replaced my doorbell button but why won't it chime in the basement?
My old button was crumbling and the chimes wouldn't ring consistantly so I decided to replace the button. I bought a replacement button today and installed it. It was good timing, too, 'cause when I pulled the old one out, it fell apart.
I have two chimes - one in the entry hall and one in the basement. I've only heard the chime in the basement once or twice. I thought it was broken but because we're down there most of the time, I really wanted to fix it.
Anyway, when I was installing the new button, I touched the two wires together and both chimes rang. I wired the new button and screwed it in to the door frame. I pushed the button again but only the chime in the hall rang.
What's wrong? Am I missing something?
HELP!
I tested the wires at the button - when I touched the wires together, BOTH chimes sounded.
A door bell is an extremely easy circuit. If it worked when you tested it then that would suggest the problem is in the wiring near the new button.
If it worked before you screwed the button down then something must have came loose when you fastened down the button.
